Situated conveniently on the Via a Hammeo Usquae Ad Thessalonicam (route connecting the East and the West culture), in the southern part of Europe, in the Republic of North Macedonia, just an hour south from Skopje International Airport or just 2 hours north of Thessaloniki Airport in Greece, on the Corridor X. Geopark is covering total area of 128,151 hectares or 1,282 square km.

 

The region is so unique in geology, nature and fertile land, drawing people to live here for the last 10,000 years. From reach and fertile valleys up to the highest peaks and unique rock formations and nature wonders, this region is constantly evolving. Currently, it represents a unique hotspot for geo-tourism, gastronomy tourism, spa tourism, adventure and alternative tourism-rock climbing, kayaking, nature escapes, archaeology and cultural events.

 

It starts from the Disan winery in Negotino municipality, 7km south of Negotino, pass the Demir Kapija municipality all the way to the Bogorodica in Gevgelija municipality and country border with Republic of Greece on south. Village of Marvinci in Valandovo municipality is the east border of the Geopark and border of Kavadarci municipality with Prilep municipality to the west side (where Alshar ore deposit is situated).

The Demir Kapija-Gevgelija ophiolitic complex is located in the central part of the aspiring geopark and represents the southernmost exposure of the Tethyan Eastern Vardar ophiolitic unit in the Eastern Mediterranean. It consists of a mafic volcanic sequence (pillow basalts, sheeted dyke diabases and gabbros) that was subsequently intruded by island arc magmas with and without adakitic affinity. These features were created during the Mesozoic Era, about 252 to 66 million years ago. Gevgelija region is famous for its extravagant casinos (Ramada Plaza by Wyndham) and a night-life, spa tourism and skiing on Kozuf Mountain. Traikovsky Wines & Spirits and village Mrzenci are a must-see attractions offering a unique experience for all your senses.

 Highlights in the aspiring MakGeopark include:

  • Unique Lorandite mineral at the Alshar ore deposit, containing minerals to be found nowhere else on the planet, an important research hub;

  • 8 million years old Elephant fossil from Miocene epoch in Dolni Disan, Negotino municipality;

  • Ophiolitic complex of Demir Kapija Gorge from Jurassic period and a unique geomorphology, caves and fossils, telling the important story of the formation of a branch of the Tethyan Ocean;

  • Macedonian Lamporites;

  • Pillow Lava near village Miravci in Grevgelija municipality;

  • Pelagonian massif, a crystalline core with a continental type of Earth’s crust;

  • Volcanic complex including Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Paleozoic metamorphic rocks and modern ski centre on the Kozuf Monutain;

  • Geothermal sources dating from Precambrian and spa-resorts in Gevgelija (Negorski Baths and Smrdliva Voda);

  • Nature-escapes and adrenaline packed adventures in Povardarie valley;

  • 4 important bird areas, 4 important plant areas, one prime butterfly area and 6 monuments of nature, parts of NATURA 2000 network in the the Geopark;

  • Gastronomy delights in the region and visiting the most important region both in terms of quantity and wine quality in South Europe;
